What is Sex Therapy?
Sex therapy is a specialized area of psychotherapy. I use a solution-focused, skills-based approach. I draw on the natural strengths of each client and weave in specific behavioral exercises to address sexual concerns. Because sexual experiences often take place in the context of relationships, I use a comprehensive model of intimacy and emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to enhance sexual and emotional intimacy.
Treatment includes discussions and practical, at-home behavioral exercises, often supplemented with relevant readings and videos. Sessions are often educational with techniques and tools to help clients grow and create conditions leading to a more satisfying use of personal capacities. There is never any nudity or sexual behavior in session.
Sex therapy is for Everyone. At the end of the day, being human means we are sexual beings. As sexual beings, we all carry complex sex histories. These sex histories include lifelong family and societal messages that affect our sexual functioning, body image, and relationships. Sex therapy can help a person explore his/her past sex history and find solutions to enhance the present and future.
For individuals, sex therapy can help heal a sexually distressing past, facilitate sexual function, or explore psychological blocks preventing full expression of emotional and/or sexual intimacy in a relationship. For couples, sex therapy can help heal infidelity, enhance sexual and emotional communication, or explore alternative sexual expressions.
The Intimacy Institute is a non-judgmental and confidential environment that allows couples or individuals to address issues, questions, and concerns pertaining to sexuality, intimacy, and relationships.
We use an inter-disciplinary approach, teaming up with the best professionals for integrated and holistic treatment. Some of our partnerships include Boulder’s best physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncture professionals, psychiatrists, personal trainers, obstetricians and gynecologists, urologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, oncologists, nutritionists, naturopaths, nurse practitioners, yoga professionals, rehabilitation hospitals, veterans clinics, and non-profits in HIV/AIDS and sexual and domestic violence.
